More Kydd Titles, More Often!

Reader feedback is very important to me and one particular aspect of my work has generated by far the most emails and comments on social media: the frequency of publication of the Kydd titles.

Team Stockwin!

Team Stockwin will be raising a glass (or two…) tonight!

‘I really must complain about this latest edition of the Thomas Kydd series. I have found myself reading it, unable to put it down and at the same time, fretting because I am fast approaching the end … I am down to the last few pages and will soon be suffering from withdrawal symptoms until the next instalment.’

‘The thought that I have to wait almost a year before reading the next Kydd book is daunting.’

‘I’m anxiously waiting to see where Kydd and Renzi are headed next. One book a year isn’t nearly enough’

Kathy and I, along with my editor Oliver Johnson and my agent Carole Blake, have given a great deal of thought to see if it might be possible to write and publish more than one book a year in the Kydd Series. I’m delighted to say that this will now take place, starting next year. It will mean a pretty tight schedule for Team Stockwin but I’m confident that it is achievable.

This is the Press Release that has just gone out.

Oliver Johnson, my editor at Hodder & Stoughton

Oliver Johnston, my editor at Hodder

‘Hodder and Stoughton are pleased to announce the acquisition of four new novels by Julian Stockwin featuring his Napoleonic era naval hero, Thomas Kydd from Carole Blake at Blake Friedmann. The Kydd novels have been continuously published one book a year since 2001, but due to popular demand for this beloved series, Hodder will, after the publication of Inferno this Autumn, publish numbers 18 and 19 of the series in 2017 and 20 and 21 in 2018.’

Julian’s editor, Oliver Johnson says

It’s a testament to the enduring popularity of this series that we will be publishing two novels a year from 2017. Julian’s Kydd books must be the most popular current series set in the Age of Fighting Sail and long may he continue!“‘

  2. Delighted to hear your good news Julian. I finished reading `Tyger’ yesterday, and having bought the whole series in the last 8 months, I am now in limbo until the new addition is released. Cracking series, can’t wait!! Best wishes.

      • Dear BJ, You recently gave details of what would be very interesting to read, namely “Letters of Seaman inWars with France(1793-1815) by Helen Watt with Anne Hawkins. However when I went in to a local bookshop to buy or order this book a few days ago was told it would cost approx.£98!Do you know if they intend bringing out a paperback version in the future at an affordable price. Kind Regards Mick Walker at Glastonbury. Original Message —–

  5. Hi Julian,
For heavens sake don’t let quantity override quality of the books. Careful research for the right context is important and that takes time. I would prefer to wait in anticipation .
    Brian.

    • I too am a bit alarmed. The joy of your books is in the detail and surely this must take a great deal of time in research. Please Julian don’t fall into the trap that Wilbur Smith has fallen into with his new writing set up.

      • Thanks for your good wishes, Hamish. In the last sixteen years or so that I’ve been working on the Kydd titles I’ve accumulated a great deal of research. Obviously each new book requires fresh research but with my very extensive bank of material to call on – and Kathy’s full-time collaboration allowing me to focus on the actual writing – this new schedule is certainly feasible. I’m looking forward to the challenge!

  6. Your goal pleases me no end. You are fortunate to be married to someone willing to help you succeed by taking on such a work load. I hope things go well and my utter selfishness in wanting more Kydd doesn’t cause too much stress to you both. Oh what the heck… how about 3 books a year?

    • Terry – INFERNO probably will be available in Australia around the same time as the UK, early October. I’ll see if I can get a release date.

  7. Just seen news of your decision to go to two books a year. Like your other readers I also get down thinking there is another year to go before another instalment. So great news, but do not let this demand affect your health. Better for fewer than more, and you are in good fettle Regards Paul Asdtbury

  8. A big thank you to Team Stockwin. This is great news, a year is just too long to wait. Kind regards, Steve Burgess

  9. This is very good news indeed, I heartily agree with another fan that I hope you still have time to thoroughly research your next adventure of our h
    ‘Heros’.
    In anticipation, thank you both.

  10. I confess I have diferent view from most of the Julian readers. I don’t mind waiting a year for the next Kydd/Renzi adventure, because I know Julian makes an inpeccable research for his novels and we, readers, benefit from that. Already ordered my paperback copy of Tyger and i’m looking forward for many hours of pure literary enjoyment!

  11. Two books a year is fantastic. Would you e-mail me a copy of the picture of Team Stockwin…Team Kydd. I want to have it put on Canvas to point out your section of my library.

  12. Excellent news Skin! Looking forward to them!!

  14. I agree that publishing more than once a year would be great but please not at the expense of the formidable amount of research that clearly is/has been undertaken for each adventure. Great to read the press release but my comment still stands. A wonderful series that stands well with the Hornblower adventures

    • Thank you for your kind words, Christopher – rest assured, however, that no shortcuts will be taken. I’m able to undertake this new schedule as Kathy now works full-time beside me in the creation of the Kydd series, allowing me to fully concentrate on research and writing.

  15. Many thanks Julian. Do I detect the interior of the Royal William Yard in the photo? Dave Lambert >

  16. Many thanks for the increase in the speed of production. I will look forward to more frequent “fixes” in the future. Please don’t forget leave timer the odd splice of the mainbrace!!!!!
    All the best
