When Julian decided to write, there could only be one topic for him – the sea. The Age of Sail had always fascinated him because this was the period when international trade and naval warfare were dominated by sailing ships. Although there is no exact definition for this era, broadly it was from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century.

Julian’s Thomas Kydd books focus on what he sees as the zenith of the Age of Sail (1793-1815), which coincides with the monumental struggle for empire between Britain and Napoleonic France.
